Social media has quietly become the leading source of leads for businesses, coming after search engines, with about 20% of marketers saying it is their main source of leads compared to 27% for search. Still, an estimated 79% of leads from marketing never turn into paying customers. Usually not because the interest was fake. Because of bad follow-up and not enough attention after that first like, comment or click. A post can have thousands of likes. Still doesn't help the sales process if there's no real plan behind it. Here is a straightforward, evidence-based guide to actually creating leads through media in 2026, not just increasing the number of followers. Why Social Media Has Become a Way to Get New Customers The numbers support the change: 68% of marketers say social media marketing helped them get new customers, and 66% say they get new customers successfully while spending only six hours a week on it. 65% of marketers say getting new customers is the main benefit they get from being on social networks. The message is positive for businesses in particular. This is not a channel that needs a big team or budget to get good results, but it does need a planned strategy instead of just posting when you feel like it. Pick the Right Platform for Your People Not every platform works the same. The best one to choose depends a lot on whether you are trying to reach businesses or people who buy things. LinkedIn. The B2B Leader LinkedIn brings in 80% of all B2B social media leads and gives an average of 229% return on investment without paying for ads across different industries, making it much better for B2B than Facebook and other platforms combined. With 89% to 94% of B2B marketers using it and 40% of B2B buyers saying they contacted a vendor after finding them on LinkedIn, it is still the place to start for any business that sells to other businesses. Instagram. Seeing Products and Feeling Impulse Instagram is great for finding products, with 87% of people in one survey saying they saw a product on the platform and decided to buy it. Its strength is in telling stories and using short videos, making it very good for brands that have strong pictures or a lifestyle message. Facebook. Reach, Especially for Older People Even though LinkedIn is doing better for B2B, Facebook is still the most used marketing platform overall, used by 83% of marketers, and it still works very well for reaching older groups and doing retargeting campaigns across different channels. TikTok. The Fastest Growing Area of Interest TikTok is seen as a place to get new customers, especially for reaching people from Gen Z and Gen Alpha, with 47% of marketers who get leads saying they want to learn more about using it better. A clear sign of where attention is going. Content That Actually Gets People to Become Customers Content marketing generates about three times as many leads as other methods, and it costs about 62% less, making it one of the best ways to get a good return. Interactive content is also becoming more popular: 83% of marketers say it works better at getting attention, and things like quizzes, calculators, and picture slideshows are working well partly because 60% of people are more likely to share content, which helps reach more people than just your current followers. For getting customers in B2B specifically, ebooks still do better than other types of content that need people to give their information to get access. Turn Likes Into New Customers • Use special landing pages for specific groups instead of sending people to a general homepage. More than two-thirds of B2B companies already do this for a good reason. • Offer something helpful (a guide, a tool or a template) in exchange for contact information instead of just asking people to sign up for updates. • Use messages to respond quickly to people who show interest because how fast you respond affects whether a new customer stays interested. • Make your call to action clear and simple. "Get the checklist" works better than "Learn more." The Step That Most Businesses Miss: Helping New Customers Grow This is where most social media efforts for getting customers fail quietly. With 79% of leads not becoming customers because of bad follow-up, the companies that do better treat that first contact as the start of a relationship, not the end. Companies that properly help their new customers get 50% more sales while spending 33% less than those that don't, and campaigns that are split up and personalised have open rates 14% higher and click-through rates more than 100% higher than generic, not split-up messages. A simple regular follow-up plan. Just three or four well-timed messages. Often helps more with getting new customers than any one post that goes viral. How AI Is Changing the Way Businesses Get New Customers Businesses that use AI for getting new customers say they get about 50% more customers who are ready to buy and up to 60% lower cost to get new customers, mostly by improving how they find people, automating early messages and making it faster to check if a lead is good. One important thing: content that uses AI but still has a person making, editing and approving the version does not lose performance, while content made completely by AI with no human input tends to do worse. The best way is to use AI to assist, not to replace the judgment of people entirely. Common Mistakes That Stop Businesses From Getting New Customers • Looking for likes and more followers instead of checking actual results in the sales process. • Posting on every platform at once instead of focusing on where your real customers spend time. • Getting customers without having a plan to follow up, letting real interest go cold. • Using vague general requests for people to do something without giving them a simple next step. Metrics That Really Matter Likes, shares, and new followers are easy to check. They often don't show if social media is really helping with sales. Useful numbers include cost per new customer, how many new customers become real customers and the percentage of new customers who get to talk to a salesperson, since these directly link social media activity to business results. For example, average cost per customer can vary a lot by platform. Facebook ads average about $23 per new customer, while other numbers say that search engine optimisation is about $31 and webinars are about $72. Giving you a good idea of how well your spending is doing. Looking at these numbers every month, not just checking them, is what turns a social media presence into a real way to get new customers. Conclusion Getting customers through social media in 2026 is not about posting more. It is about posting with a clear purpose on the right platform using content that gets people to care and following up properly to turn interest into real customers. The data shows clearly: businesses that mix the content for the platform in a real way to get new customers and regular follow-up outperform those who just care about how many people are watching. Fix these basics and social media stops being a way to look good. Becomes a real, measurable part of your sales process. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Q1. Which social media platform gets the new customers? For businesses that sell to businesses, LinkedIn is the best, bringing in about 80% of all B2B social media new customers and giving an average of 229% return on investment without paying for ads. For businesses that sell to people, Instagram, Facebook, and increasingly TikTok usually work best since they depend more on pictures and quick decisions. Q2. How long does it really take to get new customers from social media? 66% of marketers say they can get new customers while spending only six hours each week on social media marketing. Being regular and having a plan is more important than spending a lot of time or posting a lot. Q3. Why do many new customers from social media not become real customers? An estimated 79% of customers from marketing don't become real customers, mostly because of bad follow-up and not enough attention after the first interest. Companies that make a plan to help new customers get about 50% more sales while using 33% less than those that just do one-time contact. Q4. Is it enough to use the free parts of social media, or do I need to pay for ads too? Both have a role. 73% of businesses use free social content to build trust over time, while paid social was rated as the second-best way to get a good return on investment in recent studies. The best plans use free content along with targeted paid ads instead of just using one. Q5. What kind of social media content gets the new customers? Content marketing gets three times more new customers than other methods and costs much less, and interactive types like quizzes, calculators and slideshows are seen as more effective by most marketers. For B2B businesses, books or guides tend to be the effective type for getting real new customers. Q6. How is AI changing the way businesses get customers? Companies using AI to get new customers say they get about 50% more customers ready to buy and up to 60% lower cost to get new customers, mostly by better finding people, automating messages and making it faster to check if a lead is good. Still, content made completely by AI without people involved tends to do worse than content that uses AI but still has a person making, editing and checking it.
